Honey looked at her baby daughter. Her head was a slightky different shape to most other babies because she had downs syndrome. She had wanted her to be perfect and do an important job when she was grown up. She had got everything all plsnned out her her and now it was ruined.
Her husband Billy had come to terms with Petal much easier than she had and she resented him for this.
She had been going to call the baby Janet but now she felt as if Janet didn't exist.
She did want to bond with her daughter but she could not imagine how she could relate to her. She was very concerned about bringing the baby home and almost wished she could leave her at the hospital. She knew that would not be an option because Billy had already bonded with their daughter.
The night before the baby was due home Honey couldn't sleep so she walked into the square and sat down on a bench. She wished she could talk to the kind doctor from the hospital again who seemed to understand what she was feeling. He had even come round to her house to speak to her.
She got up and went for a short walk. She heard a noise from behind the local shop and went to see what it was. It was a mother cat and her kittens. She noticed that the kittens couldn't walk straight. The mother seemed to love them though. If any of them wandered too far away then she picked them up in her mouth and took them to the back enterance of the shop. Then the kittens wanted a feed so she stayed to watch. The mother made sure they had all had enough milk and then they all went to sleep, all curled up round her.
Honey wondered if maybe she would be able to love Petal after all. Just bacause she was handicapped then she would still be able to love Honey very much.
She went back home and was able to get some sleep. The next morning Honey and Billy went to collect Petal from the hospital. Billy was amazed that Honey walked straight up to Petal, picked her up and told her she loved her.
"I'm so relieved that you said that," Billy said.
"Our daughter is beautiful," said Honey, "She might be a different but she can still love us."
They took Petal home and in the taxi Petal squeezed Honey's hand. Honey was sure that her daughter was telling her that she understood everything.
Honey bought her daughter as many items with cats on as she could. She decided to get Petal a cat as soon as she was a bot older. She thought it had to be a sign of good luck for the family.
